Release Week: Brandon Sanderson's The Rithmatist; Antti Tuomainen's The Healer; Neil Gaiman's Smoke and Mirrors; World War Z; The Strange Adventures of Rangergirl; Fiction River; and John Scalzi's The Human Division

Posted on 2013-05-15 at 17:15 by Sam

May 8-14, 2013: It's a very, very crowded middle release week in May, with a long list of new audiobooks including new books in translation, a new YA novel from Brandon Sanderson, Neil Gaiman voicing one of his earlier collections, and finally an "unabridged" (scare quotes explained later...) US recording for World War Z. And more. How long is the list? Very long. I grudgingly winnowed things down to six seven picks, but others (a non-fiction Scatter, Adapt, and Remember: How Humans Will Survive a Mass

Release Week: The Human Division, Glamour in Glass, Shades of Earth, Rage is Back, and Impulse

Posted on 2013-01-16 at 20:41 by Sam

Well, it's the middle of January and 2013 is getting into full swing, and though there's not a big crop of highlight-reel concurrent releases this week, one of my most-missing titles of 2012 is here, along with the first installment of John Scalzi's serial novel The Human Division. Also: at the bottom, three five more "Whispersync for Voice" deals I stumbled across this week.

The Human Division gets underway with a double-length (bit under 2.5 hours) first episode, The B-Team: The Human Division, Episode 1

The Human Division

We've been talking to Steve Feldberg at Audible about the serialization of John Scalzi's next novel The Human Division. The first episode, "The B-Team," is going to drop on January 15th, and there will be an additional episode for the following 13 weeks. Here's some more of what he told us:

We’re going to be publishing THE HUMAN DIVISION to coincide with Tor’s e-book schedule – one chapter a week for 13 weeks, beginning Jan. 15. The pre-orders should be up soon, and you’ll be able to see all the chapters

Release Week: Rip-Off!, Mayan December, Bradley P. Beaulieu, Terry Goodkind's The First Confessor, and more

Posted on 2012-12-21 at 19:0 by Sam

The middle of December brings some ear candy for the holiday season, including an all-star author/narrator anthology, the end of the world, secondary world fantasy, and quite a bit more. Still, with all that, my mind's on a "missing" audiobook, that for Jesse Bullington's The Folly of the World, my most-anticipated title this week. And at the bottom, details for another "Whispersync for Voice" price quirk, this time netting you both the Kindle and Audible formats of Richard Kadrey's Sandman Slim. (Sorry for

Scalzi's The Human Division Audiobook to be Serialized?

Posted on 2012-10-23 at 21:24 by Dave

John Scalzi, author of Redshirts, Fuzzy Nation, and Old Man's War has just announced that he's completed his new novel (set in the Old Man's War universe): The Human Division.

Scalzi has been talking for a while how this book is made up of a series of interlocking stories, and will be released serially as eBook episodes, with the collected edition coming out around the same time as the final story. But in his post today, Scalzi mentions that this might not only happen for the eBook, but for the audiobook

After ending a run of eight audiobooks in my June listening with the amazing The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, I listened to seven audiobooks in August, with Michael J. Sullivan’s Theft of Swords, Daniel O’Malley’s The Rook, and G. Willow Wilson’s Alif the Unseen being the outstanding listens.

Listening report: June 2012

Posted on 2012-09-12 at 3:21 by Sam

After six audiobooks in May (though KSR’s 2312 went on well into the first week of June) I listened to eight in June, with Tim Powers’s On Stranger Tides and Michael Chabon’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay being the outstanding audiobooks, with plenty to recommend Mark L. Van Name’s No Going Back, John Scalzi’s Redshirts, and Jon Sprunk’s Shadow’s Son.

REVIEWS: (Note: as I’m terribly terribly behind in these reviews, these are short (or long in the cases where I did not have time to
