Audible.com release day: The Exegesis of Philip K. Dick

Posted on 2011-12-04 at 03:37 by Sam

We don’t often get Saturday releases, but maybe it’s because Audible.com’s servers finally finished processing the just-over 52 hours of the December 7-released Brilliance Audio production of The Exegesis of Philip K. Dick By Philip K. Dick, edited by Pamela Jackson and Jonathan Lethem, and narrated by Fred Stella:

So, just what is the behemoth? From the publisher description:

Based on thousands of pages of typed and handwritten notes, journal entries, letters, and story sketches, The Exegesis of Philip K. Dick is the magnificent and imaginative final work of an author who dedicated his life to questioning the nature of reality and perception, the malleability of space and time, and the relationship between the human and the divine. Edited and introduced by Pamela Jackson and Jonathan Lethem, this is the definitive presentation of Dick’s brilliant, and epic, work.

I’m curious to hear how this one translates into audio.

Being published by Carina Press in e-book, J.L. Hilton’s Stellarnet Rebel is 30 days away — Jan 2, 2012. I’ve been looking forward to it for quite a while, and today there’s an excerpt and, at the bottom, some news I have been waiting to see confirmed: there will also be an Audible.com audiobook!

Audible.com release day: Diane Duane's A Wind From the South: Raetian Tales, Book 1

Posted on 2011-12-02 at 21:33 by Sam

Originally published by Badfort Press on Kindle in February, A Wind from the South: Raetian Tales, Book 1 By Diane Duane Narrated by Jessica Almasy comes to audio via Audible Frontiers:

It’s a book I’ve heard nothing about and which I would generally skip over, but a couple of things about the cover give me pause: the first is that it is fairly striking; the second is that it boasts “New York Times Bestselling Author” across the top and, well, I figure I should probably look into this one a bit more closely and not just skim it over:

The Guilded Earlobe reviews The Night Eternal by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan

Link: The Guilded Earlobe reviews The Night Eternal by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan

Quick Thoughts: The Night Eternal, and the Strain trilogy in total, may not live up entirely to what I expected, but if you can trudge through the rough patches early in the novel you will be rewarded with a well plotted final confrontation which leaves the series on a high note.”

A great list of ChiZine Publications books are coming to audio

Posted on 2011-12-02 at 13:10 by Sam

As a postscript to unrelated correspondence, I complained to CZP co-publisher Brett Savory that I wanted to see more audiobooks of CZP titles. Well, I should have been paying better attention, as there’s not one but two audiobook publishers working on CZP titles.

Firstly, the folks at Iambik Audiobooks have already produced the first of five CZP titles they have in the pipeline:

Chasing the Dragon by Nicholas Kaufmann is narrated by Alex Foster, and should go live at Audible.com soon — through it’s already available for direct purchase and download via Iambik. (For more on the book, and a peek at its lovely book cover, visit the CZP book page for Chasing the Dragon.)

Next up is People Live Still in Cashtown Corners by Tony Burgess, which should be available next week according to Savory. For Iambik, the following are in production:

A narrator in need: Jay Snyder

Posted on 2011-12-02 at 01:02 by Sam

Via a Twitter post, narrator Oliver Wyman (The Children of the SkyGatewayFinch, …) shares that:

Michal Friedman lost her life delivering twins last week. Please make a donation to help Jay Snyder raise his children: http://sgp.cm/c60302

Jay Snyder is both the narrator for 81 audiobooks at Audible.com, as well as the father of newborn twins. Tragically, his wife died shortly after giving birth last Friday:

Michal Lura Friedman lost her life on Friday, November 25, 2011 in New York City, due to complications from a c-section shortly after delivering very healthy twins, Jackson James and Reverie Vivian Snyder. For those of you who never met her, Michal was a beautiful, talented woman who was thrilled to be pregnant with her first children. Many of you know “Michal the Girl” as a musician, but her greatest dream was to be a mother. For seven long years she and Jay tried to make this dream come true. Michal was widely loved, and in particular has left behind many friends in her Buddhist and music and voice communities. Many people are inspired to offer help for her husband Jay and their children. This generosity is greatly appreciated and would provide tremendous relief. Although there will obviously be needs far into the future, we are trying to help with immediate expenses, which will add up so quickly with twins. Jay needs all the support he can get in order to provide the care that is needed for Jackson and Reverie.

As a father of two who can’t imagine having to go it alone without both the love of my life and my partner in life, my heart breaks for Mr. Snyder and his family and friends. Help out if you can, whether by donating or by spreading the word or (though I really have no idea how helpful this is) buying one of his audiobooks:

Audible.com release day: Peter F. Hamilton's 1993 debut novel Mindstar Rising

Posted on 2011-12-01 at 20:42 by Sam

Mindstar Rising is the 1993 first novel from prolific British author Hamilton, whose 10 books have sold more than 2 million copies. “It’s the 21st century, and global warming is here to stay, so forget the way your country used to look. And get used to the free market, too – the companies possess all the best hardware, and they’re calling the shots now. In a world like this, a man open to any offers can make out just fine. A man like Greg Mandel for instance, who’s psi-boosted, wired into the latest sensory equipment, carrying state-of-the-art weaponry – and late of the English Army’s Mindstar Battalion. As the cartels battle for control of a revolutionary new power source, and corporate greed outstrips national security, tension is mounting to boiling point – and Greg Mandel is about to face the ultimate test.”

Audible.com unveils its audiobooks of the year: Editors' Picks and Customer Favorites, and more

Posted on 2011-12-01 at 17:28 by Sam

Picking Stephen King’s 11-22-63: A Novel as its Audiobook of the Year, Audible.com also unveils its lineup of the Best of 2011 in various categories, along with naming Lorelei King as the Narrator of the Year based on customer ratings, providing several lists of selections by editors, and even identifying the site’s Most Helpful Reviewer and Most Followed Reviewer. (I worry that this might lead to competitive reviewers refraining from following other popular reviewers, or marking reviews as helpful, but, well, what can you do.) And, last but certainly not least, it unveils a 20-title-deep list of Customer Favorites for 2011. Behold! I break down the categories and poke a bit at the editors’ picks within:
