Audible's "Treat Yourself" sale ends tonight: Luke Daniels reading Kevin Hearne, Wil Wheaton reading John Scalzi, and more
Posted on 2015-12-02 at 21:45 by Sam
I mentioned this already in the midst of last month's #WhispersyncDeal roundup, but it bears repeating once more, with feeling: here's my picks from Audible’s “Treat Yourself” $4.95 sale, which ends December 2, 2015 at 11:59 PM PT:

Harry Potter, now on Audible
Posted on 2015-11-20 at 17:21 by Sam
Well, it's finally happened. For years, if you wanted to (legally!) listen to the Harry Potter series in audio, you could only avail yourself of the physical CD sets, either buying them outright or (as I did) patiently waiting in the library hold list. Then! In 2012, as reported here of course, the US (read by Jim Dale) and UK (read by Stephen Fry) digital audio editions became available at the Pottermore shop, albeit with a hefty price tag of $29.99 (for the first three books, each) and $44.99/each for the

"What is Necessary is Not Always Just!" The Tremontaine Listen-A-Long Continues!
Posted on 2015-11-10 at 06:25 by Dave
"The North Side of the Sun" (Tremontaine, Episode 2) by Alaya Dawn Johnson, Narrated by Sarah Mollo-Christensen and Nick Sullivan Length: 1 hour, 38 minutes
While last week focused on the different introductions to Riverside and this cast of characters, this week the story seemed to tighten it's focus on Kaab in particular, though we also spent time with Micah, Rafe, and (SURPRISE) Tess and Ben. Kaab's storyline drove the whole episode -- she's sent on an errand to the Fenton household to secure saffron

Hot Chocolate and Sex! Dave Begins The Tremontaine Listen-A-Long!
Posted on 2015-11-03 at 07:28 by Dave
"Arrivals" (Tremontaine, Episode 1) by Ellen Kushner, narrated by Sarah Mollo-Christensen, Nick Sullivan, and Katherine Kellgren Length: 1 hour, 52 minutesFinding out that there was a new story set in Ellen Kushner's Riverside was kind of like waking up to a delicious cup of chocolate and then sporting with the beautiful woman beside me. And then some more chocolate. And then some more sport. You get the idea.
Welcome to the Tremontaine Listen-A-Long! Here there's swordfighting, chocolate, sex

Good Monsters?
Posted on 2015-10-31 at 19:42 by Dave
Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury, read by Christian Rummel Length: 9 hours, 8 minutes
Cabal by Clive Barker, read by Chet Williamson Length: 6 hours, 44 minutesNothing says Halloween quite like monsters. Over the last few weeks, two books I've listened to have focused on monsters and our reactions to them: Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes and Clive Barker's Cabal. Both of these books are considered classics of their eras, and listening to them back-to-back, I found their

Downpour.com audiobook rental program review and offer
Posted on 2015-08-20 at 17:12 by Sam
I'd been meaning to check out Downpour.com's digital audiobook rental program for a while; there's a recent flurry of titles out that I really want to get to soon -- most recently Molly Tanzer's Vermillion and Aliette de Bodard's The House of Shattered Wings -- and there's only so much money in the audiobook slush fund for them. I've noticed the $5.95/$6.95 rental program for a while, but was never really quite that tempted. I like the idea of being able to go back and listen to a title again in a year or

Hugo Award nominees in audio, 2015 edition
Posted on 2015-04-16 at 19:34 by Sam
From an audiobooks standpoint, I don't have too much to say about this year's Hugo Awards controversy. However, I do want to cover the nominees in terms of what's available in audio, even though this listing is already out of date as nominees are disqualified (for prior publication, etc.) or withdrawn. Here goes, starting with the Best Novel nominees:
- Ancillary Sword, Ann Leckie (Orbit US/Orbit UK) -- read by Adjoa Andoh for Hachette Audio
- The Dark Between the Stars, Kevin J. Anderson (Tor Books
