In Downpour's 100-book $5.95 Sci-Fi sale there are dozens of highly-rated and recommended titles. Here's what most caught my eye, from a quartet of great titles from 2015, to Cory Doctorow, Jeff VanderMeer, Catherine Asaro, Walter Mosley, Jane Rogers, and Brenda Cooper, to classics from Ray Bradbury and Walter M. Miller. (If you really love classic sf there's plenty of Heinlein and Bova to peruse as well.)

Downpour's "Black Friday" sale ends tonight: Samuel R, Delany, Women Destroy Science Fiction, Kim Stanley Robinson, Jeff VanderMeer, new releases, pre-orders, rentals, and more

Posted on 2015-12-03 at 20:23 by Sam

I mentioned this already near the end of last month's #WhispersyncDeal roundup, but I figured I would expand things a bit and offer up one last reminder that Downpour.com's "Black Friday" sale extended well beyond the one day, and finally does end tonight (Thursday, December 3). There's plenty of titles well below credit cost, and pre-orders (!!) and rentals are also included. One I’d recommend, right off the bat?

Downpour.com audiobook rental program review and offer

Posted on 2015-08-20 at 17:12 by Sam

I'd been meaning to check out Downpour.com's digital audiobook rental program for a while; there's a recent flurry of titles out that I really want to get to soon -- most recently Molly Tanzer's Vermillion and Aliette de Bodard's The House of Shattered Wings -- and there's only so much money in the audiobook slush fund for them. I've noticed the $5.95/$6.95 rental program for a while, but was never really quite that tempted. I like the idea of being able to go back and listen to a title again in a year or

Cory Doctorow audiobooks now available at Downpour.com

Posted on 2013-11-17 at 15:08 by Sam

While I wasn't looking, a quartet of Cory Doctorow's audiobooks showed up at Downpour.com -- they aren't available on Audible.com due to Audible's DRM-only format and Doctorow's anti-DRM stance. I don't know when they arrived, but it's a welcome sight and one I've been asking for since Downpour's launch as a DRM-free multi-vendor alternative to Audible.com. So, as promised in a quick update on this week's Release Week write-up, here's some more links and pictures and verbiage about Doctorow's audiobooks

A second look at Downpour

Posted on 2012-11-19 at 15:49 by Sam

A little over a month ago, I gave my first thoughts on Downpour, a new DRM-free multi-publisher audiobook service from Blackstone Audio. Still officially in "Beta", I've had another month of buying, downloading, and listening, so it's maybe time to give a bit of an update.

A new iOS app version released in late October solves an occasional issue with play position save, by far the biggest issue for me. And an Android app is also available now, though I haven't been able to test it yet. (If Kobo wants to

First thoughts on Downpour: DRM-free and beta-testing (updated)

Posted on 2012-10-11 at 10:32 by Sam

Downpour is a new multi-publisher DRM-free digital audiobook (and physical audiobook) website and iOS app launched by Blackstone Audio, with titles from Recorded Books, Hachette Audio, and more. The site is a bit slow at times (note: it is still in Beta) but it is certainly usable, though a link here and there is wonky (when browsing Science Fiction titles, which are by default and always by default sorted by title, try clicking to sort by release date and you’ll instead get the page for Captain’s Blood by
