Interview Monday: Bob Reiss (The Guilded Earlobe)

Posted on 2012-01-02 at 14:00 by Sam

Welcome to 2012! I’m hoping to provide an interview every Monday this year, ranging from authors, to narrators, editors, engineers, reviewers, and more.

To start this series off I couldn’t think of a better interviewee than Bob Reiss, one of the best audiobooks reviewers around at his blog The Guilded Earlobe, which I’ve followed since stumbling onto it last summer.

Q: I was thinking about setting a goal to do 52 (some short!) interviews in 2012, whether it’s authors, narrators, reviewers, whatever. And I thought who better to start with than you? Your blog has been just AWESOME to follow.

First off, before the questioning begins, I would like to thank Sam for all he does here at Audible SF/F. Anyone who is a fan of speculative fiction and audiobooks needs to check this blog. 2011 was a great blogging year for me, based a lot on the many wonderful people I have had the chance to interact with, and Sam has been a great supporter of my blog, and an asset to the community.

Q: How long have you been listening to audiobooks?

My plans for this blog in 2012!

Posted on 2012-01-02 at 03:17 by Sam

Whew. 2011 is barely a day over, and here I am planning a hole year of blogging about science fiction and fantasy audiobooks. First, a couple of changes:

  • I’m probably going to listen to fewer than 80 audiobooks this year. I want to take better advantage of the reading time I do have — those times where I could have been sitting and reading but instead have been sitting and listening. So instead of an 80-20 split on audiobooks vs. “real reading” I’m hoping to bring it closer to 50-50.
  • I’ve been covering too many releases, even in brief these take time. So, I’m going to start trying to filter even more, going from a “am I a bit interested in this?” to “would I listen to this tomorrow if I had the time, or will this be on my wishlist in a month?”

That said, my rough plans for the year are to give this blog a little more structure, with (interspersed with short reviews and other bits) “Interview Mondays”, “Release Week Wednesdays”, and “Feature Fridays” — whether those features are reviews, previews, articles, or guest features. Well, thanks for following along so far, I’m looking forward to a great 2012, starting with my first “Interview Monday” tomorrow with The Guilded Earlobe’s Bob Reiss. See you then!

Audiobook release day: Hal Duncan's Vellum: The Book of All Hours and Douglas Hulick's Among Thieves

Posted on 2011-12-30 at 20:18 by Sam

I wasn’t planning on posting today, but then two books popped up which have been high up on my “where’s the audiobook?” list for a while. The first is Vellum: The Book of All Hours By Hal Duncan Narrated by Bernard Setaro Clark For Audible, Inc.:

Duncan’s acclaimed 2005 novel: “It’s 2017 and angels and demons walk the earth. Once they were human; now they are unkin, transformed by the ancient machine-code language of reality itself. They seek The Book of All Hours, the mythical tome within which the blueprint for all reality is transcribed, which has been lost somewhere in the Vellum – the vast realm of eternity upon which our world is a mere scratch.”

The second is Among Thieves: Tale of the Kin Series #1 By Douglas Hulick Narrated By Kirby Heyborne for Tantor Audio:

This one was on my “where’s the audiobook?” list for 2011, so it appears I should have waited another week: “Drothe has been a member of the Kin for years, rubbing elbows with thieves and murderers while smuggling relics on the side. But when an ancient book falls into his hands, Drothe finds himself in possession of a relic capable of bringing down emperors - a relic everyone in the underworld would kill to obtain.”

2011 in review, 4 of 4: My picks for the year's best in science fiction and fantasy audiobooks

Posted on 2011-12-23 at 13:24 by Sam

This is the last of four posts looking back at 2011 in science fiction and fantasy audiobooks, after my year in listeningwhat I missed, and the most missing audiobooks. Here, I lay out my picks for the year’s best in science fiction and fantasy audiobooks!

I already spilled the beans on my pick for the best new audiobook of the year, that being Glimpses By Lewis Shiner Narrated by Stefan Rudnicki:

This one I reviewed back in March, and my opinion of this 1994 World Fantasy Award winner hasn’t changed a bit: “This is an authentic book of a time that was and of timeless music that almost was, and true human characters moving between them. I enthusiastically recommend it.”

That said, there were a lot of really good audiobooks this year and I wanted to single out a few more.

RUNNERS UP, BEST OVERALL:
